Tips to optimize Video b-roll libraries

One of the key lessons I’ve learned in video is that you can never have too much video b-roll to use for projects. Over the past fifteen years I’ve created over 100 photo libraries for wineries, agricultural companies & tourism associations where my background as a photojournalist has helped me craft impactful stories through imagery. More planning is needed to create video b-roll libraries, but the same principles apply – timeless, sense of place, storytelling video clips with compelling visuals to captivate the viewers attention.

When carefully planned, video and photography can be captured on the same shoot; this is especially relevant for events like harvest, spectacular sunsets or sunrises, and lifestyle shoots involving many models and styling where it would be cost prohibitive or impossible to reproduce the same scene on different days. Several cameras can be set up to capture the action from multiple angles, including time-lapse, drone aerials, adding camera motion with a slider or jib, etc, and ideally two shooters work in close tandem with similar aesthetics for each scene.

Here’s a few examples of short video clips that have been used in social media and archive b-roll for larger video stories. Creating effective video b-roll clips is a similar strategy as creating effective photo libraries, which I’ve detailed on a previous blog post linked here –

Washington Wine Commission award winning videos

Telly Awards logoI”m thrilled to share the news that ‘Our Story’ video about the history, people and terroir of Washington State wine just won a Telly Award! In the industries premier award for film and video productions “Our Story” was recognized from a field of nearly 12,000 entries from across the globe & awarded the Silver Telly – an honor that less than 10 percent of entries receive – in the Non-Broadcast Productions Travel/Tourism category.  Special thanks to Steve Warner & Chris Stone of Washington State Wine, and the creative talents of Dane Henry, Robert Holmes, & Tim Shisler, an amazing team to work with to tell the story of ‪#‎WaWine‬!

Here’s the consumer version of “Our Story”:

Here’s a few behind the scenes photos from our video campaign for the Washington State Wine commission. We’ve reunited the same team as the Noble Spirit documentary film: Tim Shisler/ Wit House Productions & myself as producers, Dane Henry/ Deep Roots Media as director / DP, and Bob Holmes as 2nd camera. We’ve also added Sean Haverstock to operate the RC Helicopter and 30 foot jib, and Bryan Liscinsky as 1st AC/ Timelapse.

Puerto Rico – adrenalin adventures & colorful culture

As a self proclaimed adrenalin junkie, I’m constantly seeking out new adventures in far-flung places. I’ve recently helicopter – snowboarded in Canada and lept off a 440 foot bungee jump in New Zealand. I’ve also been a frequent skydiver, scuba diver, mountain biker, and rock climber, and avid trekker – for 18 months, I traveled vagabond style through the South Pacific and S.E. Asia hiking up Mt. Kinabalu in Borneo and to the base camp of Mt. Everest.

However I don’t consider myself an extreme athlete or adventurer. It’s all relative – especially compared to all the characters I’ve encountered on my journeys. For the ten years I worked at various sports companies I was continually amazed at the boundaries athletes could push and the obstacles those with limitations could overcome. As a photojournalist I’ve had the good fortune to illustrate stories by pioneers of the adventure travel industry such as Tim Cahill, founder of Outside Magazine, who has spent a lifetime forging his own path.

So how would my experiences in Puerto Rico compare? I found an ideal balance between easily accessible adventures and authentic culture. It was an easy way to dip my toes into both worlds during my whirlwind week visit.

Here’s the photo and video highlights:

Photography & Multimedia/ video checklist for commercial clients

1. Does your photography capture the personality of your brand?

Are your photos authentic, memorable, and instantly identifiable?  Do they capture your unique sense of place, or are they generic?  Do your visuals inspire your customers to create an emotional connection to your brand?

2.    Are you consistently integrating photos and visual media?

Do you have professional quality photos and videos consistently utilized on your website, blog, social media, printed collateral and press releases?

3.    Are you maximizing your media coverage?

When a journalist covers your winery in a magazine or newspaper, do you have high quality photographs available to accompany the story?  In today’s market, fewer publications have time or budget to send a photographer to accompany the writer.   Your coverage space can double or triple with professional images custom created for a publication’s audience.

4.    Are you managing your visual assets?

Are your photographs and videos keyworded and captioned for search engine optimization?  Do you have an image library available for immediate, high-resolution download? Are your photos and videos of consistent high resolution, press-ready quality?  Is your visual media backed up on three separate hard drives in multiple locations, and also available on multiple servers online?

5. Do you have a multi-media or video strategy?

Is your video HD quality with the ability to be utilized in a variety of applications?  Are you also evaluating the above questions for your multi-media and video projects?
